“Sophie” is inspired by the stunning painting by Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s (1889 – 1943) "Douze Espaces à plans, bandes angulaires et pavés de cercles" (1939) Kunsthaus Collection. Reconciling extremes with confidence—Dada and Geometric Abstraction, fine art and utilitarian objects—Taeuber-Arp’s works boldly engaged with the intellectual context of international modernism. Sophie Taeuber-Arp is one of the most important artists of the twentieth-century avant-garde and is considered a pioneer of Constructivist art.The new collaboration between Kunsthaus Zurich and ZigZagZurich is a tribute to the influence Kunsthaus Zürich has had on the art scene in Switzerland and around the world. From its humble beginnings in 1787, when a group of artists and art lovers met for friendly discussions and mutual encouragement, Kunsthaus Zürich has gained international recognition since the early 20th century thanks to a combination of permanent exhibitions and a significant art collection. These stunning wool blankets are inspired by three renowned paintings by Wassily Kandinsky, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Alexej von Jawlensky found in the Kunsthaus collection and the Gabriele and Werner Merzbacher collection.
